Dar es Salaam. Defending champions Young Africans (Yanga) face a challenging task today as they take on Azam FC in the ongoing Mainland Tanzania Premier League at the Azam Complex in the city.
In addition to this match, also known as the Dar es Salaam Derby, other fixtures scheduled for today include JKT Tanzania against Namungo FC at Major General Isamuhyo at 2 pm, Coastal Union facing Singida Black Stars at 4 pm, and Mashujaa hosting Tabora United at the Lake Tanganyika Stadium in Kigoma.
However, all eyes and ears will be on the Azam Complex from 7 pm for the decisive match for Yanga, who aim to maintain their winning streak in the league and seek revenge against the Ice-Cream Makers. In the first-leg match played at the same venue, Yanga lost 1-0.
As per the current league standings, Yanga are at the top with 64 points from 24 matches, while Azam FC sit in third with 51 points from 25 matches.
A victory for Yanga will expand their lead over bitter rivals Simba, who are second with 57 points from 22 matches.
For Azam FC, a win will bring them to 54 points and solidify their position in third, which is also contested by Singida Black Stars, who are fourth with 50 points from 25 matches.
Yanga head coach Miloud Hamdi said their goal is to maintain their winning streak in the competition to pave the way for winning the title.
“It is going to be a tough match because Azam FC is one of the strongest teams in the league. My players are ready for the clash,” said Hamdi.
He added that the players are in top form and understand the importance of the match.
“We played two tough matches in just nine days. However, that will not stop us from winning despite the tiredness. All the mistakes we made in the previous match against Coastal Union have been rectified, and my players have promised me that they will do their best,” said Hamdi.
Azam FC coach Rachid Taoussi also expressed optimism about winning the game to improve their position in the league standings.
“We are ready for the match, and our main target is to win. The players are in top form, and I believe they will not let us down,” said Taoussi.
