Red eyes outbreak in Tanzania, health ministry advises caution

Dar es Salaam is battling a surge in viral keratoconjunctivitis, commonly known as "red eyes," sparking concern and prompting the Ministry of Health to urge residents to take precautionary measures.

Hospitals in the commercial capital are facing an influx of patients, with a sharp rise in reported cases – 869 new infections in the past month compared to a mere 17 during the same period previously.

"We are closely monitoring this highly contagious infection of the eye surface," stated Prof. Paschal Ruggajo, Director of Curative Services in the Ministry of Health.

"While there's no specific treatment, the good news is that symptoms usually disappear within two weeks, even without intervention."

Reddened eyes, swollen eyelids, persistent pain, and yellowish discharge are telltale signs of the infection, which can affect one or both eyes.

To tackle the spread of the disease, Prof Ruggajo emphasised the importance of good hygiene practices.

Frequent handwashing, avoiding touching your eyes, and using separate towels are crucial steps in curbing further transmission.
