Dar es Salaam. Young Africans (Yanga) made a spectacular advancement into the second preliminary round of the CAF Champions League by defeating Vital’O of Burundi with a staggering 10-0 aggregate score.

The decisive match took place at the Azam Complex, where Yanga overwhelmed Vital’O with a 6-0 victory on August 24, 2024, securing their spot in the next round.

Yanga will now face Commercial Bank of Ethiopia (CBE) in the second preliminary round.

CBE advanced by eliminating Sports Club Villa of Uganda with a 3-2 aggregate score. In their first leg, CBE won 2-1 away, and the return leg ended in a 1-1 draw.

Yanga’s first leg of the second preliminary round will be an away fixture between September 13 and 15, with the return leg scheduled to be held in Dar es Salaam between September 20 and 22.

From the outset of the match, Yanga demonstrated their dominance. Despite making seven changes from the squad that won the first leg 4-0, Yanga’s head coach, Miguel Gamondi, orchestrated a commanding performance.

The Argentinean tactician replaced Ibrahim “Bacca” Hamad with Dickson Job and altered the midfield by introducing Jonas Mkude and Aziz Andambwile alongside Duke Abuya, leaving Maxi Nzengeli, Khalid Aucho, Mudathir Yahya, and Stephane Aziz Ki on the bench.

Clatous Chama and Pacome Zouzoua, who had played in the first leg, were retained, while Prince Dube, a starter in the first match, was replaced in the lineup. Clement Mzize and Zambian attacking midfielder Kennedy Musonda led the striking force.

The goals for Yanga were spread across several players. Pacome Zouzoua scored the first goal with a penalty in the 13th minute after Vital’O’s defender, Amedee Ndavyutse, handled the ball on the goal line, resulting in a straight red card.

The second goal came from Clement Mzize in the 48th minute, followed by Clatous Chama’s strike in the 50th minute. Prince Dube added the fourth goal in the 72nd minute. Aziz Ki and Mudathir Yahaya also contributed to Yanga’s goal tally.

Yanga had the opportunity to score even more, but missed chances by their strikers meant the final tally could have been higher.

Pocket Sh50 Million from President Samia Suluhu Hassan

In addition to their impressive performance on the field, Yanga received financial support from President Samia Suluhu Hassan.

The club has been awarded Sh50 million as part of the President’s initiative, “Goli la Mama,” which rewards Tanzanian teams with Sh5 million for each goal scored in CAF competitions. This campaign aims to encourage and support Tanzanian clubs participating in these international tournaments.
