Simba to meet tough teams in CAF Confederation Cup

What you need to know:

  • Besides Simba, another team representing the country in the CAF Confederation Cup is Coastal Union of Tanga.

Dar es Salaam. Football giants Simba SC should not expect a cakewalk during the next edition of the CAF Confederation Cup against formidable teams that have qualified for the competition so far.

Simba were placed third in the just-ended Tanzania Mainland Premier League to secure a slot in the CAF Confederation Cup. Young Africans (Yanga) and Azam FC will represent the country in the CAF Champions League.

Besides Simba, another team representing the country in the CAF Confederation Cup is Coastal Union of Tanga.

According to the current status of the CAF Confederation Cup, Wydad Club Athletic of Morocco, Asec Mimosas of Ivory Coast, and AS Vita of the DR Congo will feature in the competition after failing to qualify for the CAF Champions League.

Other notable African premier league teams are yet to finish their seasons, with regular teams struggling to secure slots in the CAF Champions League.

History shows that Wydad, Asec Mimosas, AS Vita and Simba had been regulars in the CAF Champions League for several years, posing strong opposition.

Simba featured in the CAF Champions League from the 2018/2019 to the 2023/2024 seasons. In the 2017/2018 edition, the Msimbazi Street giants were eliminated by Al Masry of Egypt following the away goal rule.

Simba recorded a 2-2 draw in the first leg at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam, and the second leg ended in a goalless draw in Cairo.

Records show that in the 2021/2022 season, Simba featured in the CAF Confederation Cup’s playoff after being eliminated in the second round of the CAF Champions League as per the body’s rules and regulations.

Simba qualified for the CAF Champions League quarterfinals (knockout stage) , but failed to make it to the semis.

For instance, on January 19, 2019, AS Vita Club were ruthless in front of the goal as they demolished Simba 5-0 in the CAF Champions League Group D match at the Stade des Martyrs de la Pentecôte in Kinshasa, the DR Congo.

The records also show that Simba managed to win only one out of four games they played against Wydad Club Athletics in the CAF Champions League since 2011.

The Msimbazi Street giants also have no good records to impress their fans against Asec Mimosas as the teams had five meetings, with Asec Mimosas registering two wins over Simba’s one and two draws since 2003.
